About ‘A Greener Melrose’

A Greener Melrose is a community-led organisation in the Scottish Borders, dedicated to promoting sustainable living through local action. Focused on practical solutions to environmental challenges, the group works across a variety of areas including transport, food production, and biodiversity. By organising hands-on projects and educational initiatives, A Greener Melrose empowers residents to adopt more eco-friendly lifestyles while fostering a stronger sense of community.

The organisation’s efforts are driven by action groups that lead projects like eBikes for Borderers, Cycleways, the Drygrange Community Orchard and Allotments, and initiatives to support sustainable food systems through Fork to Farm. A Greener Melrose also engages in advocacy and partnerships with other organisations, working to amplify the impact of their local actions through broader networks like the Scottish Borders Climate Action Network.

At its core, A Greener Melrose is about empowering individuals to make a tangible difference in their local environment, building a sustainable future that benefits both people and nature. Whether through practical projects, community events, or collaborations with other groups, the organisation strives to make living sustainably both achievable and rewarding for all. The organisation is a Scottish charity (SC052374) and, from the outset in 2009, adopted the principles of the Transition Network. In practice this means that it’s members who decide what they do – they form self-organising semi-autonomous groups, each with their own structure, aims and objectives.
