A thriving community in a sustainable environment

Newtown Bowden Active Travel Path

We aim to create a new, direct and safe off-road path connecting the communities of Newtown St Boswells and Bowden (1.5 miles).

Bowden has a limited bus service and no services. Newtown St Boswells has a GP surgery, supermarket, shops, school and bus connections to larger towns in the Borders and Edinburgh. The road connecting the two villages has a very narrow verge, with no footpath or lighting. The road is narrow and winding, vehicles travel fast, making walking and cycling along the road unattractive and potentially unsafe.

Working with both Community Councils, a working group is exploring the development of a connecting active travel path.

A survey of local residents (102 respondents) in autumn 2025 indicated strong support from both communities for a new, safe path: 81% would use a new path to walk and 55% would use a new path to cycle.
